I Enjoy What I Do for a Living

Working as a Fort Myers chiropractor keeps me very busy every day. This is because this is a state where the weather is almost always nice and warm, and many of the people here like to get out and participate in all sorts of things. People especially love to surf here, and you can imagine that a lot of people come in to see me with hurt backs. I know why they go back out to do it again and again because I am a surfer, too. I hope to never have to give it up and I plan to do it when I’m old and grey.

I started surfing when I was in grade school. My older brother took me out one day to teach me how to do it. It was so fun and free to sail through the waves on my own. I had been on boats before and really enjoyed that, but this was something else. I was somewhat in control, but for the most part, the ocean also had control of me. Get Your Metabolism Cooking With Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is an excellent skin moisturizer and it can help to reduce dry and cracked skin. As a component of a healthy diet, this unique oil is still considered somewhat outlandish by many westerners. The benefits of adding it to your diet are numerous and potentially life changing. Parts of the world, such as the South Pacific have used coconut as a staple of their diets for many years. In the Tokelauan population, there is no indication of heart disease in spite of steady consumption of the saturated fats in coconuts.

What makes coconut oil unique is its combination of fatty acids rich in medium chain triglycerides (MCT) that are easily absorbed in your body and perform a variety of essential functions. Chief among these is lauric acid, which is also produced in mother’s milk. The oil also includes polyunsaturated fat in the form of lineloic acid and polyunsaturated fats as oleic acid. In addition, coconut oil supplies vitamin E, providing a natural lubricant and protectant for the skin. Also present is vitamin K, essential for blood clotting, and minerals such as potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.

One of the key benefits of coconut oil relates to the ability of the body to absorb MCTs easily. This process can speed the expenditure of energy, which boosts the metabolism. The result is you burn more fat as you consume coconut oil. The effect of this appears more pronounced on the more dangerous fat in your abdomen and clumped around organs. Remarkably, good results in loss of this fat occurred without adding any new exercise regimens to test subjects. When the liver processes the fatty acids in the oil it produces ketones, which can be used as a fuel source and leave you feeling satisfied. This reduces your appetite, which further supports weight loss initiatives.

The medium chain triglycerides in coconut oil and lauric acid in particular, also provide significant antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties to protect the body against a variety of pathogenic bacteria, yeast, fungi, and enveloped viruses. Even bacteria resistant to some antibiotics are suppressed by the oil. This therapeutic effect extends to the bloodstream as well, where MCTs improve cholesterol levels and blood flow, which may lower the risk of heart disease.

The ketones created by the liver from MCTs are also shown to reduce the risk of epileptic seizures in children. These ketones in the bloodstream supply energy to the brain and support synaptic activity. Too much glucose destroys brain cells whereas ketones stimulate brain cell health and growth. This has shown to have an immediate effect on patients with mild forms of Alzheimer’s disease and is believed to be a key component in supporting brain health and cognitive function.

One of the first ways you can start to use coconut oil, preferably unrefined or virgin oil, is in frying and baking foods that call for oils or butter. The oil has a relatively high smoke point, which makes it a good match for cooking. You can also use a teaspoon of it on baked sweet potatoes and vegetables instead of butter. If you eat steel-cut or rolled oats or a yogurt smoothie for breakfast, add a spoonful into the mix as well. Soups, stews and curries can also be enhanced with a spoonful of this beneficial oil.

We Thought Our Daughter Had a Cavity in Her Tooth, but It Was Something else

All of us go to the dentist on a regular basis. Our youngest girl is afraid of all medical procedures, and probably is afraid of the dentist the most. What do you do when she says, “Daddy, my tooth hurts?” You cannot make it go away, so you go to the dentist. The last place she wanted to go. Our Fremont dentist is very nice, but our little girl is just very fearful of potential pain. She has never had pain at the dentist, but she is afraid that she might have it. You cannot make fear like that dissolve instantly. She just needed a lot of positive experiences at the dentist to help.

Her last few visits made her nervous, but she was okay after her exams were over. She said she was uncomfortable and nervous, but that there was not any pain. Now that she had a toothache, I figured she would need a shot and the drill would come out. The dentist did an exam and found a sliver of a popcorn kernel got between her gum and tooth. The dentist said that happens all the time. Continue reading We Thought Our Daughter Had a Cavity in Her Tooth, but It Was Something else

I Slipped on a Slimy Sidewalk and Felt Like I Broke My Back

I slipped on a slimy sidewalk. Have you ever heard of such a thing? I would sue the owner, but it was me. However, our homeowners insurance might cover the medical expenses. I landed hard on my butt and hurt my tailbone. I also hurt my left arm and shoulder. In the course of causing all the bruising and maybe even a broken coccyx, I also twisted my back pretty bad. I saw an MD and a chiropractor in San Francisco for total therapy to resolve the problems. The MD told me only time would help me feel better. I needed time to heal up. When three weeks went by and the tingling and burning sensations continued, I went to the chiropractor.

My back had spasms and trigger points. The therapy included electrical stimulation that felt weird but really helped. The adjustments helped the burning and all the tingling to go away. The nerves where irritated due to the big back twist I did on the way down trying not to fall. Now you may be wondering how we got a slimy sidewalk. I Was Too Tired to Function Properly

Not that long ago, I always felt like I was tired. It did not matter how long I slept or where I slept, I just felt like I needed more of it. My wife told me that I toss and turn all night, and that I look like I am in discomfort too, and I actually felt bad for her because that meant that I keep her up! I talked to my doctor about this, and he suggested that I see a chiropractor in Sacramento to see if there is anything wrong with my spine.

My doctor did do some testing, but nothing came back as conclusive. He told me that the tiredness is more than likely coming on because I am not sleeping good. Continue reading I Was Too Tired to Function Properly
